The NHLBI Names Acting Director

Dear NHLBI HIN Member,

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) would like to share two important announcements with you.

Elizabeth G. Nabel, M.D. is leaving her position as Director of the NHLBI. Her last day at the Institute will be November 30, 2009. Dr. Nabel, who is a leading scientist and recognized expert in the development of novel genetic and cellular therapies for cardiovascular disease, has led the NHLBI as its Director since February 2005 and been an integral part of the National Institutes of Health community for the past 10 years. We all wish her well in her new role as President of Brigham and Women's/Faulkner Hospitals in Boston.

We are pleased to announce that Susan B. Shurin, M.D., who has served as the Deputy Director of the Institute since February 2006, has been appointed as the Acting Director for the NHLBI, effective December 1, 2009.

Dr. Shurin is a pediatric hematologist and oncologist who held appointments as Professor of Pediatrics and Professor of Oncology at Case Western Reserve University before coming to the NHLBI. Her extensive experience in managing large research programs, particularly clinical programs, her research expertise, and her familiarity with and within the Institute makes her extraordinarily equipped to guide the NHLBI through this period of transition.

Please join the NHLBI in congratulating Dr. Shurin on her appointment.

We would greatly appreciate a quick note at NHLBIHIC@air.org to let us know how you use this information.
