Enhanced NHLBI HIN Membership Benefits

e-newsletters, images of Health Information e-newsletterDear NHLBI HIN Member,

As you've heard, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) conducted a survey of Health Information Network (HIN) members in fall 2008 to better understand member expectations, improve health information services, and improve content development and message effectiveness. Several of the NHLBI HIN enhancements you can expect to see are:

  • Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed to allow Web sites and social network members to display and share the latest NHLBI HIN news
  • New topics and media channels, including podcasts, videos, and interactive quizzes
  • Health information and education e-mails targeted to patients and the public on taking action to prevent heart disease and lower risk factors; screening and diagnostic tests; nutrition, physical activity, and other aspects of a healthy lifestyle; and common diseases and conditions
  • Articles of interest to health professionals focused on research and clinical information, including guidelines

Content Specifically Designed To Meet Your Areas of Interest

All NHLBI HIN members can identify their occupations and areas of interest in their HIN member profiles. Although providing this information is optional, the NHLBI wants to offer targeted messages and information designed to meet your interests.

For example, if you indicate that you are interested in overweight and obesity information, you can expect to receive updates from the NHLBI on the Aim for a Healthy Weight and We Can! campaigns. If you also tell us that you are a health professional, you will receive announcements of the latest clinical practice guidelines. Patients, family members, friends of patients, and the general public will receive HIN e-mails on a variety of health information topics as well as information about NHLBI health education materials. Likewise, by completing your member profile, you won't receive extra e-mails on topics that don't interest you.

The HIN member profile asks you to select one of the following occupations (with space to fill in "Other" if needed):

  • Physician
  • Nurse or nurse practitioner
  • Other health care provider
  • Health educator/communicator
  • Dietitian
  • Patient, family, or friend of a patient
  • General public interested in NHLBI topics

Available areas of interest are:

  • African Americans
  • American Indians and Alaska Natives
  • Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders
  • Asthma
  • Blood diseases
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Children/youth
  • Cholesterol
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
