Shaping the Future of Research: A Strategic Plan for the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute

The NHLBI announces a new strategic plan intended to set the course for the next decade of research, training, and education to reduce the national burden of cardiovascular, lung, blood, and sleep disorders.

The plan introduces three overarching goals, reflective of the movement of scientific discovery from "bench to bedside:"

  • Goal 1 – Form to Function: To Increase understanding of the molecular and physiologic underpinnings of health and disease
  • Goal 2 – Function to Causes: To develop better approaches for improved diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, and
  • Goal 3 – Causes to Cures: To translate research results into everyday practice for medical care, health systems, communities, and individuals

Powerful new research tools, information technologies, imaging, and new research fields including genomics and proteomics underlie many of the strategies that support each of the goals. The plan emphasizes investigator-led research, and innovations to help close the gap between scientific discoveries, and successful integration of those discoveries into daily health practice.

More than 600 individuals contributed to the strategic plan, including researchers in basic and clinical sciences and representatives of professional societies and patient advocacy groups. They are listed in the full report.
