We Can!: Ways to Enhance Children's Activity and Nutrition

Get the Inside Scoop on Reaching the Media

We Can!™ has a new resource—Reaching the Media: A Toolkit for We Can!™ Communities—providing an array of materials you can use for media outreach, ranging from key program messages, to templates (i.e., sample press releases, public service announcements, letters to the editor), to tips on the art of interviewing. These tools will help you establish two-way bridges between you and your local media contacts, including reporters, producers, or editors.

If built solidly, these proverbial bridges will let you drive great, community-based information on your site's We Can!™ successes to the media. By covering your success stories, the media—in turn—will drive increased credibility and visibility for your programming back to you.

And as you know, credibility and visibility are key to recruiting more program participants, partners, and even volunteers. See all the resources and tools to start partnering with your local media today!

Our newest supplemental training on the
We Can!™ Energize Our Families: Parent Program
is now available online. As an added bonus, registered dietitians and certified health education specialists also can earn continuing education units for completing this no-cost training.

The online training introduces the four-session We Can!™ curriculum designed to help you provide parents and primary caregivers with the knowledge and tools to help their families maintain a healthy weight. The training gives you an overview of the Parent Program, a quick look at key content areas for each program session, and—perhaps most importantly—firsthand, on-the-ground tips from experienced We Can!™ program facilitators that you won't find anywhere else.

And the best part of it all? The training is divided into nine chapters with a total running time of approximately 2 hours, which can be divided up and completed at different times. So there's no need to block out a 2-hour chunk of time.

We Can! energize our families, a family guideUse We Can!™ Materials

The online training gives a solid overview and plenty of ideas and tips. Its essence is from the We Can!™ Energize Our Families: Parent Program—A Leader's Guide, an essential curriculum for community planners. This guide provides the materials to conduct a four-lesson curriculum with fun hands-on activities with parents—emphasizing tips for their families to choose and eat healthy foods, become more physically active and reduce screen time. All of the handouts are included and available in the appendix.

The We Can!™ Family Guide workbook contains all of the handouts and activity sheets that are used during the four sessions of the We Can!™ Parent Program. The handouts are designed to reinforce the program's core concept of energy balance, or the long-term balance between energy in (calories from food) and energy out (calories burned through activity). The handouts also can be used at home to help parents and caregivers plan meals, create healthy grocery lists, save money while eating healthily, and track their family's physical activity and screen time. Community planners may also wish to order copies to provide to program participants.

Order both today:
We Can!™ Family Guide at http://emall.nhlbihin.net/product2.asp?sku=08-5839 for ONLY $2.
We Can!™ Leader's Guide at http://emall.nhlbihin.net/product2.asp?sku=08-5850 for $7.50.
