Your Guide to Lowering Your Blood Pressure with DASH

Currently 65 million American adults have high blood pressure. Health care providers often tell patients to "watch your diet and cut back on salt." This is sound advice, but figuring out what to eat and how much to eat is not always simple. That's why NHLBI has developed the new "Your Guide to Lowering Your Blood Pressure with DASH" updated guidebook, which is based on the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stopping Hypertension) research findings. The guide is easy-to-read and provides step-by-step advice anyone can use to lower and control blood pressure by following the DASH eating plan.

Check out the many new features:

  • New look
  • Updates consistent with the 2005 U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans
  • Photos and stories of people taking steps to lower their risk of heart disease
  • More information on potassium and weight loss
  • A week's worth of menus and easy-to-prepare recipes for two levels of daily sodium consumption—2,300 and 1,500 milligrams per day
  • A food diary for recording food intake and physical activity
  • Tips for heart-healthy choices at every meal, even when dining out
