Joint Conference:
Region VII Cardiovascular Disease Conference
and
University of Kansas Obesity Prevention & Treatment Conference

Many people have a constellation of major risk factors, lifestyle risk factors, and emerging risk factors that constitute a condition called the metabolic syndrome. The metabolic syndrome is characterized by insulin resistance, the presence of obesity, abdominal fat, high blood sugar and triglycerides, high blood cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Cardiovascular disease has the same risk factors.

How can we do a better job of detecting and treating individuals with metabolic syndrome? What steps can be taken to prevent development of the syndrome? How will these steps impact the development of cardiovascular disease?
