Every year, one in three American
women dies of heart disease.
It's the #1 killer of
women, regardless of race or ethnicity. It also strikes at younger
ages than most people think, and the risk rises in middle age.
That is why the
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, part of the National
Institutes of Health (NIH), is sponsoring The Heart Truth
campaign in partnership with:
- American Heart Association
- Office on Women's Health, U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services
- WomenHeart: the National Coalition
for Women with Heart Disease
and other organizations committed to the health and
well-being of women.
The
Heart Truth campaign aims to increase awareness about heart disease
as the #1 killer of women, and motivate women to take heart health
seriously and engage in personal action to reduce risks.
What You Can Do
- Distribute copies of The Heart
Truth for Women campaign brochure to women. It features women
telling their own stories about heart disease and provides
information about risk factors and a checklist of key questions to
ask the doctor. Trustworthy sources to contact for additional
information on heart disease are provided. Order up to 50 free
copies of this short, easy-to-read brochure. Larger quantities of
the brochure are also available to institutions on a cost-recovery
basis. Available in English and Spanish. To see and order the

- Use the latest guidelines
and other science-based information to address prevention and
treating heart disease risk factors in your women patients
forcefully and thoroughly. To help with preparing for this role,
the NIH in cooperation with the Association of Academic Health
Centers (AHC), is offering a continuing education opportunity
entitled, "The Untold Story: Women and Heart Disease." This 1-hour
continuing medical education (CME) program, focuses on
cardiovascular disease in women and features the latest
evidence-based medical research. It is presented in an
easy-to-understand format that can be put readily into practice.
The program is available for $125.00. The NIH/FAES designates this
educational activity for a maximum of 1.5 hours in category 1
credit for each program (total of 15 hours for entire series)
towards the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. There is no fee
charged for the CME credits. For more information, please visit http://www.centernet-tv.com/nihseries.html
