Track Your Health With a Daily Food and Physical Activity Diary

To avoid weight gain over the holidays, you need to be in "energy balance." The amount of energy or calories you get from food and drinks (energy IN) is balanced with the energy your body uses for things like breathing, digesting, and being physically active (energy OUT).

You can stay in energy balance by following a healthy eating plan and doing 150 to 300 minutes (2 to 5 hours) a week of moderate-intensity activity, such as brisk walking together with family before or after your holiday meal and staying active the entire holiday season.

Keeping a record of your daily food intake and activity levels will help you stay on track. Download a Daily Food and Activity Diary from the NHLBI Aim for a Healthy Weight Web site. This tool can easily be printed so you can write down exactly what you ate for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks each day. You also can track your daily physical activity and other health behaviors to make sure you are in energy balance.

Other strategies and tools to help you maintain weight are available at the updated Aim for a Healthy Weight Web site.
