Since 1983, May has been observed as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. Individuals and organizations everywhere have joined in the fun to promote awareness of the value of physical activity in the pursuit of happier, healthier, more productive lives.

Use the following items to encourage people in your community to move more this month:

Get Your Community Moving with Hearts N' Parks

The Hearts N' Parks Community Mobilization Kit features a 309-page, field tested guide to help you organize and promote low-cost, effective heart-healthy programs in partnership with your local park or recreation center. It includes activity plans, promotional samples, tips on getting media coverage, and more. Developed with the National Recreation and Park Association, Hearts N' Parks is highly adaptable for a range of ages, activities, and settings. The kit also includes an 8-minute Hearts N' Parks video.

Hand out "Exercise and Your Heart: A Guide to Physical Activity"

Regular, moderate physical activity can help improve the way your patients look, feel, and work. This pamphlet provides information on the effects of physical activity on the heart and practical guidelines for starting and staying on a physical activity program. The benefits, risks, and common myths about exercise are discussed, and tips and sample activity programs are included.

Make Your Clinic Weight Management-Friendly

The "Aim for a Healthy Weight Primary Care Provider Education Kit," contains every best practice publication on weight management the NHLBI had, plus a prescription pad for weight loss success, a quick-reference card on "best practice" weight counseling techniques, and a pocket-sized, self-retracting tape for quick waist circumference measurement. There are also many reproducible patient handouts on weight management, such as food preparation tips, sample reduced calorie menus, and a guide to physical activity. A copy of the Clinical Guidelines on the Identification, Evaluation, and Treatment of Overweight and Obesity in Adults: The Evidence Report is also included for your reference library.
